We spend most of our lives trying to live up to who and what others think we should be. Our life story is often built around what others have told us about who we are; what we should do or not do with our lives personally and professionally. They tell us about what we are or are not good at, along with how we should look, dress, think, feel and spend our time. We can invest a significant amount of time and energy living up to others’ standards and desires for us, to the point it can become our own inner narrative.
In our lives we might have extended family or parents who want us to live out their dreams. Teachers or coaches that were or were not kind to us when interacting with us over the course of our younger years. Friends, neighbors and society in general who have all given us messages, in a variety of different ways, to include social media. These messages are focused on who we are and how they feel we should be in the world. We listen, because we we feel pressured or compelled to do so.
This does not make the task of knowing our true authentic selves easy and can be the cause of significant anxiety and depression for many people. This journey towards a more authentic self is the cornerstone of True to Heart Counseling, as we believe living true to your heart and uncovering your authentic self is the path to joy, inner peace and happiness.
